SCAD Museum of Art App

During my graduate program at SCAD, in our community design class, we were tasked with creating an app for the SCAD MOA (Museum of Art). They only had a website previously, so we attempted to leverage some mobile tech such as geotracking, beacons and Augmented reality to increase the usability and wayfinding within the museum.

Our focus on improving the museum experience was based on three principles.

Easy Wayfinding

The museum itself is a great example of historic preservation in downtown Savannah, GA. The Museum was built and refurbished on the grounds of the old train station. Therefore the space isn’t organized like a traditional museum, which can sometimes lead to difficulties in navigating the space.

Community Resource

The museum is host to many guest lectures from esteemed members of the greater art and design community. The lectures are recorded on video and accessible by checking out a dvd at the school library. Which can sometimes be difficult for students and leave alot of them left out of what could be a life changing lecture. We proposed the lectures and videos be hosted in the app.

More Immersive Experience

The museum previously had a system that utilizes compact disc players for audio guides that would take the guests down a linear path, with little control for the guest in terms of direction or timing. We believe that guests have different preferences and some prefer to self-guide themselves in a non-linear experience.

We proposed new branding for the SCAD Museum of Art, they had a few different logo variations that they were using interchangeably so we proposed a new standard.
